June is cancer survivor’s month – an opportune time to talk about new strategies to address a major side effect of many cancer therapies – fatigue. Side effects from cancer can be debilitating but there are strategies to help improve and reduce discomforts. I had the privilege of attending the 2019 AICR Research Conference in Chapel Hill, North Carolina in May. As a certified specialist in oncology nutrition, I appreciate that this conference provides updates on the most current research on nutrition and physical activity for cancer prevention and survivorship. April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month. AICR is raising awareness and providing the latest research on oral cancer prevention and sharing tips on managing nutrition during treatment. Oral cancer includes cancers of the mouth (lips, tongue and cheeks), pharynx and larynx.
Tobacco use and alcohol are the most important risk factors for this cancer. AICR’s CUP report on cancers of the mouth, pharynx and larynx found strong evidence that drinking alcohol and having excess body fat increase risk. Evidence suggests that nutrition can play a crucial role in preventing oral cancer. Having an overall healthy diet and including plenty of vegetables may be helpful in decreasing the risk of cancer.Read more… “Oral Cancer Awareness Month”
I returned from the 2018 Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo™ refreshed, invigorated and recharged with a passion for nutrition and cancer. This year FNCE®, a conference for Registered Dietitians, was located D.C., right in AICR’s backyard. The conference included scientific sessions and a massive expo hall.
